Job description:
Curator of Visitor Experience
Reporting to the Museum Director, the Curator of Visitor Experience is responsible for the development and delivery of the visitor experience program. The program is to enhance and ensure visitor satisfaction, enjoyment, connection to the museum, and appreciation of BC’s maritime heritage. The primary focus for the job is management of exhibits and public areas of the museum. It involves designing the visitor experience, overseeing its development and maintenance, and facilitating the application to all aspects visitors will experience while in the museum.
The Curator of Visitor Experience is responsible for the design, research, development, maintenance and presentation of the Museum’s exhibits and collaborates with the Programme Coordinator to deliver educational programs. These will primarily be collections-based and topical to BC maritime subjects. The sum of this work is to make the collection and collection information accessible to the public; and to manage the experience of the museum’s visitors, or users, for maximum benefit for both the users and the Museum. This includes the curation of permanent exhibits, temporary exhibits, and strategies for public access to the research library, artefact collection, archival materials and photo collection.
• Manages the development, installation and maintenance of the Museum’s exhibits and temporary displays.
• Conceptualizes, plans, executes, maintains, and evaluates exhibits, gallery tours, speaker series, and hands-on activities for a variety of audiences.
• Develops exhibits and the visitor experience plan in collaboration with the Curator of Collections, the Manager of Programs and the Marketing Manager.
• Remains up to date regarding tourism and marketing information and initiatives, and applies the information to visitor experience developments for the benefit of both the visitor and the museum.
• Supervises volunteers, temporary or seasonal employees, and student placements in the tasks (as needed) of exhibit creation, fabrication and maintenance as well as public access to the Research Library.
• Supervises and provides ongoing training for exhibition staff
• Evaluates exhibits and programs and general visitor experiences using a variety of methods.
• Provides plans, reports and evaluations to the museum management as required.
